Points forts

  • Let us guide you through these secret passages and shopping arcades on a wonderful walk.

The covered passages are a set of arcades constructed between buildings to improve traffic flow and to also create shopping galleries. Located on the Rive Droite and near the main boulevards, these structures were created for wealthy clients. The passages had their heyday in the first half of the 19th century as those in Paris numbered more than 130 at the time. They were abandoned following the construction of Hausmann's great works and the emergence of department stores.

This route offers to bring you up to date about why these passages and other galleries were so appealing on a stroll around the 2nd and 10th district. Among the twenty or so passages that are open and accessible, your Urbanaute guide will take you through around a selection of them.

What you get from this experience:

  • - An original stroll that will take you through several neighborhoods via its "secret" passages
  • - A selection of the most beautiful covered galleries still in operation
  • - A discovery of artisanal trades

Let yourself be guided through covered passages and  galleries during a surprising stroll.

The covered passages are a network of walkways built between buildings to improve circulation in Paris or to host shopping arcades. Located on the Right Bank and near the grand boulevards, these structures were originally designed for an affluent clientele. The passages enjoyed their golden age during the first half of the 19th century, with Paris boasting over 130 at the time. They were gradually abandoned following Haussmann's major renovations and the rise of department stores.

Admire the beauty of these spaces, finely preserved over time thanks to various renovations that ensure constant renewal while maintaining their authentic charm.
During a stroll through the 2nd and 9th arrondissements, explore and discover many iconic passages that remain open and accessible to the public today.

Immerse yourself in the history of the restaurants and shops of the era, while learning about little-known artisanal trades passed down through generations. Experience places you might not have suspected existed, while listening to the guide's historical anecdotes about individuals who left their mark on France.
